The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, retired Vice Admiral Ibok Ete Ibas, is currently in a closed-door meeting with the House of Representatives Ad Hoc Committee on Rivers State.
The meeting, which comes after a series of postponements, signals the lawmakers’ move to exercise their constitutional authority to assume the legislative functions of the suspended Rivers State House of Assembly.
At the outset, Ibas apologised for his earlier absence from a scheduled meeting and requested more time to adequately prepare his briefing. He explained that he was still adjusting to his new responsibilities and appealed for the committee’s understanding.
Following his remarks, journalists were asked to leave, and the meeting continued behind closed doors.
President Bola Tinubu had declared a state of emergency in Rivers State and appointed Ibas as Sole Administrator. The move followed the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the state House of Assembly amid an escalating political crisis.
Fubara and his predecessor, the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, have been locked in a power struggle over control of the state’s political structure.
