A Chief Magistrate Court in Ifo, Ogun State, has sentenced controversial street-hop singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, to three months in prison for assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest. The sentence carries an option of a N30,000 fine.
The court found Portable guilty of committing the offences on November 18, 2022, at Okeosa, Ilogbo, within the Ifo Magisterial District. He was arrested in March 2023 after reportedly attacking a police inspector and obstructing the execution of an arrest warrant.
Police prosecutor, Inspector Olumide Awoleke, told the court that the singer, alongside others still at large, conspired to commit assault and also unlawfully beat one Emmanuel Oluwafemi, a male officer, during the incident.
According to the charge sheet, Portable was also accused of stealing several pieces of musical equipment in 2022, including a Yamaha H55 studio monitor, a Studio 2 interface cable, and an AKG P420 condenser microphone. However, the court only ruled on the charges of assault and obstruction.
Chief Magistrate Babajide Ilo sentenced Portable to one month in prison with an option of a N10,000 fine on the first count and two months with an option of a N20,000 fine on the second. Both sentences are to run concurrently.
