The Nigeria Police Force has called on the Take It Back Movement (TIB) and other civil society groups to cancel their planned nationwide protest slated for April 7, describing it as “ill-timed and mischievous.”
According to a statement released on Sunday by Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the protest clashes with the National Police Day—a date set aside by the Federal Government to honor the service and dedication of police personnel across the country.
Civil society group TIB had earlier announced plans to hold demonstrations on April 7 to protest the alleged misuse of the Cybercrime Act and the recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. TIB’s National Coordinator, Juwon Sanyaolu, said the protest was intended to spotlight pressing governance and civil rights issues.
While acknowledging the constitutional right of Nigerians to peaceful assembly, the police expressed concerns over the choice of date, noting that it coincides with an event expected to host top dignitaries, including foreign Inspectors-General of Police and diplomats.
“The Nigeria Police Force is not opposed to peaceful protests but urges organizers to consider alternative means of engagement, such as dialogue with appropriate government bodies,” the statement read.
Inspector-General of Police Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun reiterated the Force’s commitment to upholding the law and respecting citizens’ rights but advised that protests should not interfere with national events.
