The Oyo State Police Command has busted a human trafficking syndicate operating out of a residential building in Ibadan, rescuing 84 victims, including a young child.

The victims, believed to be nationals of the Democratic Republic of Congo, were allegedly lured to Nigeria with fake promises of job opportunities, only to be held against their will.

Police said the traffickers also extorted large sums of money — reportedly in U.S. dollars — from the victims’ families in an elaborate scam.

The dramatic rescue operation took place in the Orogun area of Ibadan, following credible intelligence.

The rescued individuals are now in protective custody at the Police Headquarters in Eleyele, Ibadan, as investigations continue to track down all those behind the scheme.
