The Adamawa State Police Command has dispelled rumours of a ban on electric bicycles, clarifying that only motorcycles remain restricted under state law.
The clarification followed a meeting between the Association of Electric Bicycle Users and the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Peace and Security, Hon. Ahmed Lawan.
Speaking on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Moris Dankwambo, the Divisional Police Officer of Karewa Division addressed the issue during a press briefing in Jimeta. He confirmed that the restriction being enforced applies strictly to motorcycles, in line with a ban instituted during the tenure of former Governor Murtala Nyako.
Concerns had been raised by electric bike users over reported incidents of harassment by security operatives, who allegedly misinterpreted the ban to include rechargeable bicycles.
During the meeting, the association appealed to the government for protection and recognition of electric bikes as a cost-effective mode of transportation, especially amid rising fuel prices.
Hon. Lawan reaffirmed the government’s support, urging users to adhere to traffic regulations and expressing appreciation to Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for his commitment to resolving the issue.
Electric bicycle users such as Yusuf Yunusa and Usman Abdulahi welcomed the clarification, noting it would significantly ease commuting challenges across the state.
