A woman identified as Abosede, the wife of a local farmer, has drowned after a canoe accident on the Erekiti River in Lagos State.
The tragic incident occurred on Sunday while Abosede, her husband Jesuyon, and her 17-year-old sister Mary were returning from their farm. The canoe carrying them reportedly capsized midstream, throwing all three into the river.
Jesuyon and Mary survived, but Abosede was swept away by the current. A source close to the family said Jesuyon managed to rescue his sister-in-law but could not save his wife.
Confirming the incident, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent Benjamin Hundeyin, said a search and rescue operation involving marine police and local divers is ongoing.
“Based on the report, teams of Marine policemen and local divers were mobilised for a search and rescue operation. Efforts are ongoing to recover the missing body. The investigation is in progress,” Hundeyin stated.
The local community remains in shock as the search continues along the Erekiti River.
