The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) has commenced the demolition of unapproved structures across the state following the expiration of the amnesty period granted by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
According to a statement from LASBCA, the enforcement exercise began in Ogudu GRA, where officials moved to ensure compliance with urban planning regulations. The amnesty period, extended until December 31, 2024, was intended to allow property owners to regularize their documents.
Permanent Secretary of LASBCA, Arc. Gbolahan Owodunni Oki, emphasized that the enforcement drive aims to restore order, reclaim public spaces, and enhance safety in the built environment.
“The government provided ample time for property owners to obtain necessary approvals, but some residents have refused to comply. As a result, we have no choice but to take enforcement action to prevent building collapses and other hazards,” Oki stated.
The demolition exercise will continue across different parts of the state as authorities work to eliminate illegal structures, curb environmental degradation, and improve urban planning.
LASBCA reiterated its commitment to maintaining a safe and well-regulated urban environment, in line with the government’s developmental agenda. The agency warned property owners and developers to adhere to building regulations to avoid future enforcement actions.
It also assured that all affected structures had been duly marked, with multiple notices issued well in advance, outlining compliance requirements.
