A fully loaded Lagos Ferry Services (LAGFERRY) passenger boat, Igbega Eko, caught fire shortly after departing from the Ipakodo Ferry Terminal in Ikorodu, Lagos, en route to Victoria Island.

The incident, which occurred around 6:45 AM, caused panic among passengers. Fortunately, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) safety officers responded swiftly, ensuring the safe evacuation of all passengers and crew.

While no fatalities were recorded, four passengers sustained minor injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.

In a statement, LASWA confirmed that its emergency response team worked alongside LAGFERRY operators and first responders to contain the situation.

“We are conducting a thorough preliminary investigation in collaboration with LAGFERRY and other stakeholders to determine the cause of the fire,” LASWA stated.

The agency reaffirmed its commitment to safety and pledged to implement any necessary measures to enhance fire prevention on Lagos waterways.

“All safety protocols remain in place, and ferry operations continue as scheduled. We urge passengers to remain calm and adhere to safety guidelines,” LASWA assured.
