Police officers in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, fired teargas to disperse protesters on Monday morning.

The demonstrators, led by the Take It Back Movement, had assembled at Isaac Boro Park to protest the declaration of emergency rule in the state when security operatives arrived and took action to break up the gathering.

Eyewitnesses reported a strong police presence at the venue from as early as 9:00 a.m., with tensions escalating quickly between the protesters and law enforcement.

“We are Rivers people—no one can tell us where not to gather,” some protesters shouted at officers, according to Channels Television.

The Nigeria Police Force had earlier advised the group to cancel the protest.

More details to come.
