The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has raised serious concerns over the escalating insecurity across Kwara State, urging the government and security agencies to intensify efforts to combat killings, kidnappings, and acts of terrorism.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the National Publicity Secretary of CDHR, Comrade Idris Afees Olayinka, the organization decried the growing state of fear and apprehension among residents following a string of violent attacks and abductions in several communities.
The CDHR referenced recent reports indicating the arrival of a new terrorist group, known as “Mahmouda,” which has allegedly launched deadly attacks in the Baruten and Kaiama Local Government Areas.
According to the organization, assailants dressed in military camouflage and riding motorcycles opened fire on innocent residents at a market square around 9:30 p.m. on Monday, resulting in the deaths of at least seven people, including four Fulani men, a vigilante, and a 19-year-old youth.
A similar attack was reported in neighboring Kaiama, where another vigilante was reportedly killed.
In a separate incident, seven travelers were abducted along the Obbo-Aiyegunle road in Ekiti Local Government Area. The victims, passengers in a Sienna bus traveling from the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to Offa, were ambushed by gunmen who left behind children and personal belongings after taking the adults hostage.
The CDHR also highlighted the recent abduction of Barrister Elizabeth Arinde, the Head of the Legal Department at Oke Ero Local Government, who was reportedly kidnapped alongside the Deputy Permanent Secretary while traveling to Ilorin on Friday, April 25, 2025.
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Kwara Branch has since called for prayers and public support for her safe release.
Reacting to these disturbing developments, CDHR warned that without swift and decisive intervention, Kwara risks descending into a lawless state similar to the notorious Sambisa Forest, a stronghold of terrorist activities in northeastern Nigeria.
“Kwara State is known for peace and harmony and is regarded as one of the most peaceful states in North Central Nigeria. It is imperative that the government intensifies efforts to maintain the peace and security that Kwarans have long enjoyed,” the CDHR stated.
The organization called on the Kwara State Government, the State Police Command, and other security agencies to synergize and deploy effective strategies to address the worsening security challenges.
It also urged the government to empower local security operatives who possess intimate knowledge of the terrain to work alongside conventional security forces.
“A stitch in time saves nine,” Comrade Olayinka emphasized, warning that urgent action is needed to prevent further loss of lives and preserve the state’s reputation as a peaceful haven.
The CDHR reaffirmed its commitment to standing with the people of Kwara in demanding safety, justice, and an immediate end to the wave of violence threatening their communities.
