Veteran Nigerian musician, Daddy Showkey, has openly criticised Niger State Governor, Umar Bago, over a controversial directive targeting individuals with dreadlocks.

During a security meeting held Tuesday in Minna, the state capital, Governor Bago ordered law enforcement officers to arrest anyone spotted wearing dreadlocks. He described the measure as part of broader efforts to tackle rising insecurity in the region.

In a pointed Instagram post on Thursday, Daddy Showkey, who is famously known for his dreadlocks, questioned the link between the hairstyle and criminal activity. He announced he was cancelling a planned visit to Niger State in protest of the order and called on the governor to lead by example.

“Mohammed Umar, na Dada be your problem?” Showkey wrote. “I was coming to Minna, but now that you asked your security agents to cut off dreadlocks, hold your state. But first, cut your beer beer [beard].”

The post has sparked widespread conversation online, with many weighing in on the governor’s controversial approach to combating insecurity.
