The Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) has issued a stern warning that any building lacking a toilet facility will be sealed, as part of efforts to curb the spread of cholera and other sanitation-related diseases during the rainy season.
The agency gave the warning during a routine inspection and sensitisation campaign conducted across major streets and communities in Ilorin.
Speaking on behalf of the Acting General Manager, Hajia Idayat Folorunsho, the Head of Waste Management Department, Mrs. Tajudeen Fasilat Feyisayo, said the state is taking a proactive stance to eliminate open defecation and poor sanitation practices.
“We are warning residents that any house or facility without a toilet will be sealed. This is a preventive step against cholera and other water-borne diseases, especially now that the rains have begun,” she said.
Feyisayo also emphasised the need to keep drainages clear of refuse to prevent flooding and water contamination.
“When drainages are blocked, water will always find its path—often with destructive consequences. Residents must stop dumping refuse in drains and should instead register with approved waste collectors,” she added.
She urged residents to provide appropriate waste bins and use sanitation nylons in both residential and commercial premises to maintain hygiene and environmental safety.
