The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared that the 2027 general elections will be a direct contest between President Bola Tinubu and the Nigerian people.
PDP Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, made the assertion on Thursday while presenting the Certificate of Return to the party’s candidate for the Anambra State governorship election, Ezenwafor Jude.
According to Damagum, the upcoming elections will transcend traditional political alignments and focus squarely on the hardship Nigerians are currently facing under the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government.
“The 2027 election is not about how many governors or leaders you have. It’s about Tinubu and Nigerians,” he said. “The ordinary man is feeling the pain, and the decision is his. This election is not APC versus any governor or senator – it is APC versus Nigerians.”
He urged party members and the electorate to close ranks in what he described as a collective mission to rescue the country from the hardship “inflicted by design, not by coincidence.”
Damagum also addressed the recent defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and members of the state cabinet to the APC. The mass defection, which took place on Wednesday, marked a major political shake-up in Delta State.
Describing the move as “sad and unfortunate,” Damagum said the PDP had been more than generous to Delta State and did not deserve such treatment.
“If there’s any state that should not have taken such a step, it’s Delta,” he said. “The party has been magnanimous. From the emergence of the current governor to his predecessor—who was also our vice presidential candidate in 2023—we supported them all the way.”
Despite the setback, Damagum expressed optimism about the party’s resilience: “We least expected this action from them. All the same, this is a party that has seen more than that, and we’re still standing.”
