Ontario may halt electricity exports to the United States in retaliation for new tariffs on Canadian goods, Premier Doug Ford announced Monday.
Speaking at a mining convention in Toronto, Ford warned that if the U.S. tries to “annihilate Ontario,” he would fight back, even cutting off electricity exports “with a smile on my face.” He emphasized America’s dependence on Ontario’s power supply, saying, “They need to feel the pain. They want to come at us hard, we’re going to come back twice as hard.”
Ford noted that Michigan, Minnesota, and New York all rely on Ontario for electricity. While the provinces play a significant role in trade decisions, he said Canada’s federal government is leading the charge against the tariffs. “We’re going to stand shoulder-to-shoulder,” he affirmed.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump reiterated Monday that the 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports will take effect Tuesday as planned. “The tariffs are all set. They go into effect tomorrow,” he stated, dismissing the possibility of an extension for negotiations.
Additionally, the Trump administration’s reciprocal tariff policy will begin on April 2, meaning the U.S. will impose the same tariffs on foreign goods that American products face abroad.
