At least three lawmakers were injured on Tuesday after violent clashes broke out in Serbia’s parliament.
Opposition lawmakers set off smoke grenades and tear gas to protest against the government and support demonstrating students.
According to Fox News, the incident has intensified political tensions in the country. Video footage from the assembly hall captured lawmakers engaged in a scuffle before flares and smoke bombs filled the chamber.
The turmoil stems from public outrage over the fatal collapse of a railway station canopy in November. Many blame the disaster on government corruption and negligence, as the renovations were carried out by two Chinese companies. The incident triggered mass protests, with demonstrators demanding accountability, ultimately leading to the resignation of Prime Minister Milos Vucevic in January.
Tuesday’s legislative session was set to vote on a law increasing university funding—one of the key demands of student protesters. However, opposition lawmakers accused the ruling majority of attempting to push through other controversial decisions without proper procedure. They insisted that the parliament first confirm Vucevic’s resignation before proceeding.
As tensions escalated, some opposition members rushed toward the parliamentary speaker, clashing with security guards after the ruling coalition approved the agenda. Others ignited smoke grenades and tear gas, filling the hall with black and pink smoke.
Parliament speaker Ana Brnabic later condemned the opposition’s actions, labelling them a “terrorist gang.”
