Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday, inaugurated newly constructed classroom blocks at Keme Balogun Senior and Junior Colleges in Ibeshe, Ikorodu.
This marks the beginning of a series of classroom projects being launched across the state.
The new and refurbished classroom facilities include those at Awori Junior College, Ojo; Euba Junior High School, Mushin; Ipara Junior College, Majiyagbe; Mainland Junior Secondary School, Fadeyi; St. Luke Junior Secondary School, Bariga; State Junior High School, Ibereko, Badagry; and Thogli Community Grammar School, also in Badagry.
Before the commissioning, the governor inspected an ultra-modern classroom block at Ajegunle Junior High School in Kosofe Local Government Area. Speaking at the event, he emphasized the importance of education within his administration’s THEMES Plus agenda.
“Education is the foundation of our development strategy. It drives economic growth, reduces inequality, and empowers individuals to break free from poverty,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
He highlighted that investing in schools directly strengthens the socioeconomic fabric of communities.
“These newly renovated and constructed facilities will serve as catalysts for change, equipping our children with the skills they need to compete in a globalized world. The construction of an 18-classroom block, renovation of existing structures, and addition of modern facilities—including a food canteen, Intro-Tech block, and sports fields—will create an environment that supports academic, social, and physical growth.”
Sanwo-Olu also noted that the projects generated employment during construction, benefiting local workers and stimulating the economy.
“Beyond job creation, these infrastructure improvements will enhance the quality of education and boost enrollment rates. This will ultimately lead to a more skilled workforce, driving innovation and economic growth in Lagos. Additionally, our focus on technical education, as seen in the new Intro-Tech block, is particularly significant,” he added.
Hakeem Smith, Chairman of the Special Committee on the Repair of Public Schools, explained that the project stemmed from concerns about the school’s deteriorating condition, which were brought to the governor’s attention. In response, Sanwo-Olu immediately approved its renovation.
In his welcome address, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Tolani Alli-Balogun, described the simultaneous inauguration of 16 classroom blocks across the state as a testament to the governor’s commitment to delivering quality education to Lagosians.
