A military correspondent from Russia’s Channel One TV was killed by a mine near the Ukraine border, her employer confirmed on Wednesday.
The incident occurred in Russia’s Belgorod region, just across from the Ukrainian border. Channel One reported that “war correspondent Anna Prokofieva died while carrying out her professional duties,” after her team’s vehicle struck a mine. Her colleague, cameraman Dmitry Volkov, was also injured in the blast.
Prokofieva, 35, had been covering the ongoing Ukraine conflict for Channel One since 2023. Her final post on Telegram, shared Tuesday, showed her in military attire, sitting in a forest with a head-mounted camera. The post, captioned “Somewhere on the border with country 404” — a term often used by pro-Kremlin bloggers to disparage Ukraine — featured her smiling.
Prokofieva’s death follows the loss of several Russian journalists during the war, including the recent death of a war correspondent from the pro-Kremlin newspaper Izvestia in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region. According to the International Federation of Journalists, at least 21 journalists have died since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.
