Dr. George Nwaeke, the Head of Service of Rivers State, has resigned from office.
His resignation was announced on Tuesday in a statement signed by Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, the Chief of Staff to the Rivers State Sole Administrator.
The statement acknowledged Nwaeke’s contributions to the administration during his brief tenure and extended best wishes for his future endeavours.
In the interim, Dr. (Mrs.) Iyingi Brown, the Permanent Secretary for Welfare in the Office of the Head of Service, has been appointed as Acting Head of Service until a substantive replacement is named.
Congratulating Brown on her new role, Ibas reaffirmed his commitment to neutrality, peace, and stability in Rivers State.
The statement read:
“The Office of His Excellency, the Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral (rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas CFR, regrets to announce the resignation of Dr. George Nwaeke, FCA, Mni, as Head of Service of Rivers State. His Excellency appreciates the invaluable contributions he made during his brief service and wishes him success in his future pursuits.”
Nwaeke’s resignation follows President Bola Tinubu’s recent declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, which led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Nma Ordu, and all members of the State Assembly.
The President’s decision has sparked widespread criticism from political leaders, civil society organizations, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and many residents of Rivers State.
