The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has scheduled fresh Local Government Council Elections for August 9, 2025.

RSIEC Chairman, retired Justice Adolphus Enebeli, announced the date during a stakeholders’ meeting at the commission’s headquarters on Aba Road, Port Harcourt. The event also marked the official unveiling of the 2025 Local Government Elections timetable and guidelines.

Justice Enebeli reaffirmed the commission’s commitment to conducting a free, fair, and credible election, urging political parties to adhere to the rules. He highlighted RSIEC’s plans for consultations, sensitisation programmes, and private meetings with political parties to address concerns and enhance the electoral process.

Referring to the recent Supreme Court judgment that nullified the last local government elections, Enebeli described it as a temporary setback that would ultimately strengthen the commission’s preparations for the upcoming polls.

The meeting was attended by political party leaders, traditional rulers, security agencies, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), religious organisations, the media, civil society groups, NGOs, and community-based organisations.

NEWS BULLETIN recalls that the Supreme Court, in a ruling on Friday, sacked the 23 LGA chairmen, citing a violation of Section 150 of the Electoral Act. The court declared the October 5, 2024, elections that brought them into office void.
