The Rivers State House of Assembly has initiated impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, by serving them a notice of misconduct.
In a notice issued on March 16, the lawmakers stated that their actions were in accordance with Section 188 of the Nigerian Constitution, as well as other relevant laws.
Allegations Against Fubara and His Deputy
The Assembly accused Governor Fubara of:
Reckless and unconstitutional expenditure of public funds.
Hindering the legislative activities of the Rivers State House of Assembly.
Making appointments to government positions without proper screening and confirmation.
Withholding salaries, allowances, and funds meant for the legitimate Assembly members and the Clerk, Emeka Amadi.
Deputy Governor Odu was also accused of supporting and facilitating the unauthorized appointments.
Next Steps in the Impeachment Process
Following the issuance of the notice, Speaker Martin Amaewhule formally forwarded it to Governor Fubara, citing that at least one-third of the Assembly members backed the allegations.
Fubara has been asked to respond to the charges in line with Section 188(3) of the Constitution, which allows the House of Assembly to decide within 14 days whether to proceed with an investigation into the allegations.
Speaker Amaewhule, in his letter, reminded Fubara of the constitutional provisions and urged him to respond appropriately.
This development marks a significant escalation in the political tension within Rivers State, as the governor and his deputy face possible impeachment.
