Shop owners at Sunmoye Area, Ikire, on Wednesday, pleaded with both the Osun State and the Irewole local government authorities to evacuate without further delay, a corpse dumped at a bus stop in the area.
PUNCH Online had on Sunday reported that a corpse dumped at a bus stop located along Ife/Ibadan expressway in Ikire, Osun State, led to panic in the area.
It was learnt the corpse could not be identified, while sources in the area also said the dead body must have been dumped in the area in the early hours.
The bus stop where the corpse was found is said to be in disuse and the presence of the body led to people avoiding the place.
Four days later, residents of the area where the bus stop is located said the corpse had not been evacuated, raising fear of an outbreak of epidemic.
Commenting on the development, two shop owners in Sunmoye, identified simply as Risikat and Akeem, both lamented the hardship residents have been subjected to owing to the presence of the corpse in the area.
Akeem said, “We have been struggling to breathe due to the foul odour coming from the corpse. It is already decomposing and the concerned authorities seem not ready to evacuate it yet.
“We reported the incident on Sunday and today is Wednesday, the corpse is still lying at the bus stop. What we were told is that Irewole local government workers who would have removed it are not working. The situation is unacceptable.
“We are at risk and that should not be. Osun government and Irewole LGA should evacuate the corpse and sanitise this whole area to prevent an outbreak of epidemic.”
When contacted, Osun Police Command Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adeoye, said from the investigation he conducted, the matter was never reported to the police in Ikire.
He urged residents of the affected community to report the incident to the police.
“The incident wasn’t reported. Residents of the area can go to a police station to make a report,” Adeoye said.
