A police inspector, Effiong Bassey, allegedly opened fire at the Atakpa Divisional Police Headquarters in Cross River State, killing a woman and injuring two others.
The incident reportedly occurred early Sunday morning after Bassey returned from night duty at Ekondo Microfinance Bank.
According to the Cross River State Police Command spokesperson, Ugbo Irene, the inspector exhibited erratic behaviour and refused to surrender his AK-47 rifle.
“Inspector Bassey barricaded the station’s gate, preventing entry and exit. Despite efforts to calm him, his behaviour worsened, leading to a tragic outcome,” Irene stated.
Without warning, Bassey allegedly fired at bystanders, hitting three people. One of the victims, 41-year-old Ijeoma Wilson Obot, succumbed to her injuries. The other two victims, identified as Charles Mkpang and another individual, are receiving medical care and are in stable condition.
Security operatives swiftly intervened, disarming and arresting the officer. He is now in custody as investigations continue.
Following the incident, the Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) for Zone 6, along with the Cross River State Police Command Management Team, visited the injured victims in the hospital. The AIG also provided financial support for their medical expenses and assured the public that justice would be served.
