The Ondo State Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with an attack on members of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) in Ogbese, Ondo State.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the incident occurred on Sunday, February 23, in Ogbese, Akure North Local Government Area, as NANS members traveled to Abuja for their annual convention.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, CSP Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed the arrests in a statement issued on Tuesday in Akure.
Odunlami stated that the command received a distress call from a NANS member reporting an unprovoked attack by some youths in the Ogbese area. In response, officers were swiftly deployed to restore order and ensure the safety of the victims. A manhunt was immediately launched to track down those responsible.
“Intelligence gathered revealed that this was not the first time NANS members had been targeted in the same community. Through intelligence-led policing, the command’s special squad successfully arrested three suspects linked to the attack,” Odunlami said.
The Commissioner of Police (CP), Wilfred Afolabi, has assured NANS members of a thorough investigation to uncover the motives behind the attack and bring all perpetrators to justice. He also reaffirmed the police command’s commitment to ensuring the safety of residents and travelers within the state.
“The three suspects are currently undergoing interrogation and will be charged in court upon the conclusion of the investigation. The Ondo State Police Command urges the public to remain law-abiding and report any suspicious activities to the nearest security agency,” Odunlami added.
In response to the intervention, the NANS team, led by Comrade Owolewa Taiwo, Zonal Coordinator for the South-West, expressed gratitude to the Commissioner of Police for the swift action taken. Taiwo also pledged NANS’ support in collaborating with the police to combat crime and ensure security across Ondo State.
