The embattled former Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, made a dramatic appearance at the Assembly on Monday. Obasa joined a group of lawmakers in a meeting held outside the legislative chamber, which was also attended by the incumbent Speaker, Mojisola Meranda.
The meeting later split into two factions, each consisting of at least ten lawmakers. The ongoing crisis began in January when Obasa was impeached while he was in the United States. Upon his return, he rejected the impeachment, calling it unconstitutional due to the lack of due process.
Last week, Obasa forcefully entered the Speaker’s office and presided over a plenary session, insisting that he had never been lawfully removed from his position.
