The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has strongly condemned the killing of 16 travelers in a mob attack in Uromi, Edo State, describing it as a heinous act that demands swift justice.
In a statement released on Friday, NYCN President Godiya Adams Bogoro expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and called on authorities to ensure those responsible are held accountable.
“We categorically denounce this barbaric act. It is unacceptable that innocent travelers should suffer such brutality. The authorities must act swiftly to bring the culprits to justice,” Bogoro stated.
He also cautioned against any retaliatory actions, urging Northerners to remain calm and allow due process to take its course.
“We acknowledge the deep pain and anger this incident has caused, but we urge our people to maintain peace and refrain from taking the law into their own hands. This tragedy must not be allowed to create further divisions among Nigerians,” he added.
NYCN also commended the Edo State Government for its prompt response to the situation and expressed confidence in Governor Godwin Obaseki’s commitment to ensuring justice.
“We appreciate the Governor’s swift intervention and his dedication to securing justice. He has consistently been a man of peace and a steadfast ally of the Arewa community,” the statement noted.
The association further called on the federal government and security agencies to conduct a comprehensive investigation and implement measures to prevent future occurrences of such violence.
“We urge all Nigerians to unite in condemning this horrific act and to work together to foster peace, unity, and mutual understanding,” Bogoro concluded.
