The Northern Senators Forum has strongly condemned the recent lynching of travelers in Edo State, describing the act as dastardly, despicable, and unacceptable. The Forum called on security agencies to swiftly apprehend those responsible for the killings.
In a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja, the Chairman of the Forum expressed deep concern over the gruesome mob attack on innocent Nigerians in Uromi, Edo State, on Thursday, March 27, 2025.
The statement revealed that the victims were profiled as Fulani kidnappers before being brutally murdered. The Forum decried the growing lawlessness that allows individuals to take justice into their own hands, emphasizing that such actions undermine the rule of law and fundamental human rights.
Condemning the killings as a grave violation of human rights, the Forum urged Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, to take decisive action in identifying and prosecuting those responsible.
The lawmakers also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his swift directive to arrest the perpetrators.
“We commend President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for instructing security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into this incident and bring the culprits to justice. This swift action reaffirms the government’s commitment to upholding justice and protecting the rights of all Nigerians,” the statement read.
The senators further emphasized that the Nigerian Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to freedom of movement and residence across the country, as enshrined in Section 41.
“No citizen can be expelled from or denied entry into any part of Nigeria. We must uphold these fundamental principles and ensure all Nigerians are treated with dignity and respect,” the statement continued.
The Forum urged the Edo State Government, security agencies, and all stakeholders to work together to prevent similar incidents in the future, calling for a culture of tolerance, understanding, and peaceful coexistence among Nigerians.
