The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has issued a formal apology to the Federal High Court, Justice Binta Nyako, and senior lawyer Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, for his misconduct during the last session of his trial on terrorism charges.
Kanu, through an emotional statement read by his lead counsel, former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Kanu Agabi, pleaded for forgiveness and assured the court of his commitment to good conduct throughout the proceedings.
In the prepared speech, Kanu specifically appealed to Justice Nyako and Awomolo to forgive and overlook his outburst in court. His lawyer acknowledged that while Kanu had reasons to be upset, he should not have allowed his emotions to dictate his response.
“In his anger, he criticized the Federal High Court, Justice Binta Nyako, the prosecution, and even his own legal team,” Agabi stated. “I sincerely apologize to Justice Nyako—she did not deserve the unjust attack. I also apologize to Chief Adegboyega Awomolo, SAN, who deserves the highest respect but was unfairly criticized. I appeal for forgiveness. Kanu is a good man, though not perfect, and he remains dedicated to the Igbo cause. While we may have differences, we must seek resolution through peace, not conflict.”
In response, Awomolo, SAN, expressed his willingness to forgive, stating that he was moved by the plea. He emphasized that he was not a persecutor but a prosecutor, working toward a fair and swift resolution of the case.
