Former U.S. Representative Mia Love, the first Black woman elected to Congress as a Republican, has passed away at the age of 49 after battling an aggressive form of brain cancer, CNN reports.
Her family announced the news in a heartfelt post on X, stating, “With grateful hearts overflowing with love for the profound impact Mia had on our lives, we want you to know that she passed away peacefully today.” According to the statement, Love was at home, surrounded by family, at the time of her passing.
Love represented Utah’s 4th Congressional District from 2015 to 2019, making history with her election. Utah Governor Spencer Cox also confirmed her passing, calling her “a true trailblazer and visionary leader.”
