The Kogi State government has earmarked ₦3 billion for the remodelling of the Government House in its 2025 budget—exceeding the ₦2.2 billion spent on the same project in 2024—while allocating only ₦350 million for the construction and rehabilitation of schools and hospitals.
A review of the state’s approved budget shows that Governor Usman Ododo’s administration also plans to spend ₦200 million on renovating and furnishing the Deputy Governor’s Lodge and another ₦200 million on the Deputy Governor’s Office. These expenses have doubled compared to 2024 when ₦100 million was allocated for each. Additionally, ₦15 million has been set aside for a generator house at the Deputy Governor’s Office.
In contrast to these expenditures on government buildings, the state has allocated only ₦350 million towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which fund essential public infrastructure such as schools and clinics. The budget also includes ₦200 million for borehole drilling across local government areas, despite data showing that 61% of Kogi households lack access to clean drinking water and 87% lack adequate sanitation.
The state’s budget priorities have sparked criticism, with many questioning the government’s focus on luxury renovations over critical public services.
