Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory, has reversed her stance and now demands a thorough investigation into the sexual harassment allegation made by Kogi Central lawmaker Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
As Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Women Affairs, Kingibe expressed her commitment to ensuring the case is properly examined. In a statement shared on her official X handle on Friday, titled My Unwavering Stance for Justice and Women’s Rights, she pledged to be at the forefront of the investigation when it reaches the Senate.
Her latest position comes just two weeks after she publicly criticized Akpoti-Uduaghan over the controversy surrounding Senate seating arrangements. Speaking on Arise TV, Kingibe had faulted her colleague for not following Senate procedures and downplayed the significance of the issue.
Clarifying her stance, Kingibe stated, “I want to assure Nigerians that I will champion the sexual harassment case involving my colleague, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan when it is formally brought before the red chamber. My initial comments were not meant to dismiss her claims but to emphasize that I was unaware of the situation at the time. However, I remain steadfast in the fight against all forms of violence against women and girls.”
She further stressed the importance of a transparent and impartial inquiry into the allegations. “If an accusation of sexual harassment is formally presented before the Senate, we must ensure a thorough investigation through the appropriate channels. Justice, fairness, and equity must be upheld, regardless of gender, status, or social class,” she added.
Kingibe also reaffirmed her commitment to gender equity in governance, advocating for the 35% Gender Inclusion Bill and the creation of special seats for women to enhance their participation in leadership. She reassured her constituents, political supporters, and the public of her dedication to good governance despite challenges.
“Any attempt to misrepresent my stance or suggest that I am sympathetic to sexual harassment in any form should be disregarded,” she concluded.
