Primary school teachers under the Local Education Authority (LEA) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have resumed their strike today, Monday, March 24, 2025, following the failure of council chairmen to implement the N70,000 minimum wage as promised in February salaries.
The directive was issued by the FCT wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) after an emergency State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) meeting held in Gwagwalada on Sunday. FCT NUT Chairman, Comrade Abdullahi Mohammed Shafas, expressed disappointment over the council chairmen’s failure to honour their agreement with the union.
Shafas recalled that the strike had been suspended on February 21, 2025, based on assurances that the new wage would be implemented. However, with the February salaries paid without the promised adjustments, the union described the situation as “disturbing, disheartening, and insensitive” to teachers’ struggles.
Following extensive deliberations, SWEC resolved that teachers across the six area councils should resume the suspended strike until their demands are met. These include:
Immediate implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage, with payment of the difference in February salaries.
Payment of March salaries reflecting the new wage.
Settlement of six months’ minimum wage arrears.
Implementation of the 40% peculiar allowance, 25% and 35% salary increases, and the N35,000 wage award.
Shafas urged all teachers to strictly adhere to the directive and await further instructions.
Efforts to reach Kwali Area Council Chairman and FCT ALGON Chairman, Danladi Chiya, for comments were unsuccessful as he did not respond to calls or messages at the time of reporting.
