Former Director-General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Dr. Ishaq Modibbo Kawu, has called for stronger ethical standards in journalism and a commitment to media integrity.
He made this appeal during an Iftar gathering with members of the Association of Kwara Online Media Practitioners (ASKOMP) at his residence in GRA, Ilorin, yesterday.
During the interactive session, Dr. Kawu expressed concerns over the growing trend of media organizations granting awards to politicians, labeling it a mockery of journalism.
Recalling his tenure as Editor at Daily Trust Newspaper, he stated that he never entertained the idea, as it compromises the credibility of the profession.
Instead, he emphasized recognizing individuals making meaningful contributions to society, citing a Congolese doctor aiding victims of sexual violence in Goma as an example.
He further underscored the importance of collaboration and unity among journalists, urging them to foster a culture of mutual respect and professional solidarity.
On the issue of social media regulation, Dr. Kawu opposed any move that contradicts the Nigerian Constitution, advocating for the protection of free speech while upholding ethical journalism in the digital space.
The former NBC DG also stressed the need for continuous capacity building and training for journalists to keep pace with the evolving media landscape.
He highlighted that professional development is crucial in maintaining credibility and ensuring the media remains a strong pillar of democracy.
In his closing remarks, ASKOMP Chairman and Informant247 Founder, Mr. Salihu Shola Taofeeq, commended Dr. Kawu for his unwavering commitment to journalistic excellence and prayed for his continued strength and contributions to the profession.
