Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed uncertainty about his candidacy in the 2027 presidential election.
Atiku, who has vied for the presidency six times, made this statement during a yet-to-be-aired episode of Untold Stories with Adesuwa Giwa-Osagie.
His remarks come just days after he announced the formation of a coalition of opposition leaders aimed at unseating the All Progressives Congress (APC) government led by President Bola Tinubu.
When asked about his plans for the next election, Atiku responded, “I don’t know because, first of all, there has to be a viable platform—more than at any other time in our political history, particularly since the return of democracy.”
However, he did not rule out the possibility of contesting, emphasizing the need for strong leadership in Nigeria.
“I have never seen Nigeria in such dire need of experienced and credible leadership as we do now. We had a similar merger in 2014—three or four of us ran for president, and when one emerged, we all supported him, and he won,” he said.
There is growing speculation that Atiku may throw his support behind former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi or former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai in the 2027 race.
