Vito Perillo, the oldest mayor in the United States, passed away on Saturday night at the age of 100.

According to the New York Post, he died while serving his second term as mayor of Tinton Falls, New Jersey.

Born in 1924, Perillo served in the U.S. Navy alongside his brother during World War II and later worked as a civil engineer until his retirement.

Despite his age, Perillo’s passion for public service drove him to run for mayor, a position he assumed in 2017 at the remarkable age of 93. His energetic campaign left many astonished that he was nearing his centenary.

During his election bid, he personally canvassed neighborhoods, distributing thousands of flyers and walking extensively around the town.

When he turned 100 in September 2024, Perillo announced that he would not seek re-election.
