The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported on Friday that its outgoing deputy force commander was injured in a violent attack on a convoy transporting peacekeepers to Beirut airport.

In a statement, UNIFIL condemned the assault and called on Lebanese authorities to conduct a full and immediate investigation to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, speaking on Saturday, denounced the attack and vowed that security forces would not tolerate any attempts to destabilize the country.

Interior Minister Ahmad al-Hajjar convened an emergency security meeting before noon on Saturday to assess the situation. He also instructed security agencies to identify the attackers and refer them to judicial authorities.

The United States also condemned the attack, which reportedly left UN peacekeepers wounded. The U.S. State Department attributed the assault to a group of Hezbollah supporters, referencing the Iran-backed militant group operating in Lebanon.
