Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has asserted that the country could not have maintained the fuel subsidy, which was abolished in May 2023.
Speaking during a national caucus meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the State House in Abuja on Tuesday, Tinubu acknowledged that while some of his government’s policies are challenging, monthly allocations to state governments have tripled since the subsidy was removed.
“I am dedicated to our manifestos, progressive ideas, and beliefs. The policies we are implementing are tough, but there’s no way Nigeria could have endured the ongoing fuel subsidy. It simply wasn’t sustainable,” he stated.
Tinubu also declared, “Today, I can confidently say, and each governor present can verify, that state allocations have tripled. We have sufficient funding from the local governments.”
However, reports from NEWS BULLETIN indicate that many Nigerians continue to experience severe economic hardships as a result of the subsidy’s removal in 2023, raising concerns that some state governors may not be doing enough to alleviate the suffering of their citizens.
