Former Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has stated that the apparent conflicts among politicians are not genuine but merely serve as entertainment for Nigerians.
Speaking during his 60th birthday thanksgiving service at St. Martins’ Catholic Church, Isan Ekiti, on Sunday, Fayemi dismissed the notion of deep-seated animosity among political figures, saying many of their so-called rivalries exist only on social media.
“All these things you read on social media are for your entertainment,” he said. “People might be surprised to see Governor Segun Oni here. During his birthday, I spent the entire day with him. If Governor Ayodele Fayose were around, he would have been here without hesitation.”
Fayemi emphasized that despite political differences, Ekiti politicians do not see each other as enemies.
“Our vision has always been a state that is not divided by political affiliations. While we may belong to different parties, we are all members of one bigger party—the Ekiti Party, the Ekiti Progressive Party—and our governor is committed to that vision,” he said.
Reflecting on his journey, Fayemi described his 60th birthday as a time for gratitude and renewed commitment to service.
“I am a product of grace, and I have many reasons to be thankful at 60,” he said. “I also want to thank our governor for making me proud. Things could have turned out differently, but he, too, is a product of grace. That’s why, despite the challenges that come with politics, we have maintained a cordial relationship built on mutual love and respect.”
The celebration was attended by prominent Nigerians, including President Bola Tinubu, who praised Fayemi for his role in the 2013 merger that formed the All Progressives Congress (APC).
“As a two-term governor, he served the people through tough economic times, leaving a lasting impact on Ekiti State,” Tinubu said. “Dr. Fayemi has demonstrated dedication in various capacities—academic, author, administrator, and development expert. As he turns 60, I wish him continued health and fulfillment.”
Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, described Fayemi’s milestone as a celebration of “a life dedicated to service and excellence.”
He added, “Thank you for your guidance and support. Thank you for all you have done for the people of Ekiti and for your mentees worldwide. We are proud of you, and Ekiti people appreciate your contributions.”
Dignitaries at the event included the first civilian Governor of Ekiti State, Niyi Adebayo; former Governor Segun Oni; Deputy Governor Monisade Afuye; Governor’s wife, Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji; Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Adeoye Aribasoye; former Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Prof. Modupe Adelabu; and former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Chief Oladokun.
Others in attendance were former Minister of Education, Prof. Tunde Adeniran; Chairman of CAVISTA Holdings, Mr. John Olajide; Chairman of Afenifere Renewal Group, Hon. Wale Osun; APC Chairman in Ekiti State, Sola Elesin; as well as serving and former members of the National Assembly and the State Executive Council.
