The crisis in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has deepened, as the party’s South-South Zonal Executive Committee (ZEC) has suspended its zonal secretary, Chief Felix Omemu, for one month over alleged misconduct and unauthorized statements in the media.
The suspension was announced at a meeting of the ZEC in Benin, where Omemu was accused of breaching party rules and causing division among members. The motion for his suspension was moved by Rt. Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule, Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, and seconded by Godwin Offiono, a member of the 10th National Assembly representing Ogoja/Yala constituency.
Amaewhule accused Omemu of making unauthorized statements in the media, calling on members not to attend the ZEC meeting, which he described as an attempt to cause disunity and undermine the party’s authority.
“The zonal secretary’s actions are illegal and a breach of trust,” Amaewhule said. “We must take decisive action to restore order and unity in the party.”
Following the suspension, PDP’s zonal legal adviser, George Turnah, was appointed as acting zonal secretary.
National Vice Chairman (South-South), Chief Dan Orbih, welcomed the decision, saying it was a necessary step to reposition the party and curb the excesses of some leaders and members.
The meeting was attended by ZEC members from five states in the South-South zone, except Akwa Ibom State.
