The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Oyo State Council, has called on security agencies to take swift action in addressing the rising incidents of crime in the state. The union specifically urged the deployment of more officers and effective strategies to curb security breaches.
This appeal was contained in a communiqué issued after the union’s monthly congress. The communiqué, signed by Seye Ojo (Chairman), Sola Obidahunsi (Secretary), and Khalid Imran (Member), was made available to NEWS BULLETIN on Saturday by NUJ Secretary Sola Oladapo.
According to the communiqué, there has been an alarming increase in armed robberies, particularly between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. in parts of Ibadan, including Mokola Roundabout, Sabo axis, Queen Elizabeth Road, Anfaani Junction, and Iyaganku. The NUJ noted that criminals have been targeting unsuspecting victims, snatching phones and valuables at gunpoint. It further observed that some commercial tricycles, known as Keke Maruwa, as well as motorcycles (Okada) and taxis, are being used in these criminal activities.
The union urged security agencies to deploy necessary measures to curb the rising insecurity. It also called on the public to remain vigilant and requested the Park Management System (PMS) to collaborate with security agencies in tackling the situation. Additionally, it appealed to the Oyo State Government to improve street lighting along Queen Elizabeth Road, particularly near the University College Hospital (UCH), as the area remains dark at night, posing a security risk.
The communiqué also raised concerns over an influx of young migrants from the North into Ibadan, noting that many of them are given motorcycles and Micra taxis upon arrival, especially in the Ojoo area. The union called on security agencies to investigate this trend and take necessary precautions.
Furthermore, the NUJ highlighted the poor condition of the morgue at the State Hospital, Adeoyo, Off Ring Road, Ibadan, describing it as hazardous. The lack of regular electricity supply has led to a worsening stench, which the union warned could result in a health crisis. It, therefore, urged the Oyo State Hospital Management Board and the Ministry of Health to take immediate action to address the issue.
