Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has advised married couples to renew their vows every 25 years, emphasizing the importance of reaffirming commitment and purpose in marriage.
Obasanjo shared this advice over the weekend in Abuja at the 25th wedding anniversary celebration of Pastors Biodun and Modele Fatoyinbo of the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA). The event also marked Biodun Fatoyinbo’s 50th birthday and was attended by prominent political figures, religious leaders, and legal experts.
Among the distinguished guests were former Sierra Leonean President Ernest Bai Koroma, former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Anyim Pius Anyim, former Minister of State for Petroleum Ibe Kachikwu, and Stanley Ifeanyi Uzochukwu, Chairman of Stanel Group. Religious leaders such as Pastor Mary Abioye, Archbishop JohnPraise Daniel, and Pastor Bolaji Idowu also graced the occasion.
Speaking at the event, Obasanjo humorously referred to Anyim as his “boss,” recalling the Senate’s crucial role in passing bills during his presidency. He stated:
> “During my time in government, he served as Senate President. If I sent a bill to the National Assembly, it needed his support to pass. So, I regarded him as my elder to ensure its approval—hence, I now call him my boss.”
Addressing the couple, Obasanjo highlighted the biblical significance of Jubilee, noting that every 25 years should serve as a time for couples to renew their vows and refocus their marriage.
> “You have now set a new standard for Jubilee—25 years as a milestone. Every couple should renew their power and purpose in marriage after 25 years. If I had my way, every marriage in Nigeria reaching this mark should celebrate with new vows and a renewed commitment,” he said.
With a touch of humor, he added:
> “For the next renewal in 25 years, I wish you well in advance. As you know, I may not be able to attend—not because of illness, but because I will be elsewhere permanently.”
Former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim, representing ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, extended his congratulations to the couple, while legal experts like Mike Ozekhome and Alex Izinyon praised the Fatoyinbos’ positive impact on society.
The event featured prayers, speeches, and a symbolic renewal of vows. Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo urged Biodun Fatoyinbo to cherish and honor his wife, stating:
> “This ring is not a symbol of dominance but a reminder of faith, love, and commitment. A love that never fails.”
The ceremony was elevated by performances from gospel artists Mercy Chinwo and Chris Morgan, reinforcing an atmosphere of love and faith. The Fatoyinbos reaffirmed their devotion, with Modele Fatoyinbo pledging lifelong submission and unity in accordance with biblical teachings.
