Kwara State Police Commissioner Victor Olaiya has issued a stern warning to officers responsible for enforcing the third-party vehicle insurance policy, urging them to uphold a high standard of professionalism.
The commissioner announced the enforcement of the policy in a statement released by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, in Ilorin on Sunday. He emphasized that officers must conduct their duties without compromising the integrity and reputation of the police force.
Olaiya also advised vehicle owners to acquire or renew their third-party insurance to avoid legal repercussions, as the enforcement process will be closely monitored.
The statement noted: “In accordance with the directive from the 22nd Indigenous Inspector General of Police of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, the Kwara State Police Command, led by CP Victor Olaiya, has commenced the enforcement of third-party vehicle insurance throughout the state as of February 1, 2025.
“This enforcement initiative is being coordinated by the Commissioner of Police and the DC Operations. Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and heads of tactical teams have been tasked with overseeing compliance among motorists in the state.
“This enforcement is in line with Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Sections 1, 2, and 3 of the Motor Vehicle (Third-Party Insurance) Act, which mandates all vehicle owners to secure a third-party insurance policy before operating their vehicles on Nigerian roads.
“This insurance policy is essential for ensuring the safety of road users from liabilities arising from traffic accidents,” the statement concluded.
