The Kwara State Geographic Information Services (KWGIS) has halted several ongoing construction projects in Ilorin for failing to obtain the necessary approvals from the agency.
The affected projects include a pavilion under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture’s urban development initiative, Peace Pharmaceutical along Asa Dam Bypass, and HRA along Lubcon Road. According to KWGIS, large-scale construction activities were being carried out at these sites without the required permits.
In a statement issued in Ilorin on Saturday, KWGIS Chairman Abdulkareem Babatunde Sulyman confirmed that Peace Pharmaceutical and HRA Lubcon have been sealed. He emphasized that the developers must comply with legal requirements before resuming work.
“Anyone undertaking a construction project in the state must obtain proper land use approvals as mandated by law,” Sulyman stated.
He further noted that KWGIS has been running awareness campaigns to educate the public on the importance of securing approvals before construction.
“This is a fundamental requirement. When individuals or government agencies disregard these regulations, we are not only obligated to stop them but also to impose appropriate penalties,” he said.
Regarding the Federal Ministry of Agriculture’s pavilion project, Sulyman clarified that, as a new development, it must undergo the standard approval process before any work can proceed.
“All government projects—whether local, state, or federal—must follow the necessary procedures. This has not been done for the pavilion, so we have instructed workers on-site to obtain the required approvals before continuing,” he explained.
Sulyman reiterated that development control measures are essential for regulating construction activities and ensuring public safety.
“The agency is responsible for maintaining standards, as it will be held accountable if any unauthorized structure collapses in the future,” he added.
