The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has strongly opposed the extension of Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun’s tenure, warning that it could undermine efficiency, breed division, and erode public trust in the police force.
In a statement on Monday, MURIC’s Executive Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, expressed concern over the recent amendment to the Police Act, which allows the IGP to remain in office until the end of the term stated in their appointment letter, rather than retiring at 60.
Akintola acknowledged recent security improvements under the police force, including the rescue of kidnapped victims and the resolution of high-profile crimes. However, he cautioned that extending the IGP’s tenure could jeopardize these gains and create internal tensions.
“MURIC’s stance is crucial, as the organization advocates for the rights and welfare of Nigerian Muslims. While the IGP’s tenure extension may not directly relate to Muslim rights, it affects national security and the well-being of all citizens, including Muslims,” he stated.
The extension has sparked widespread debate, with some defending it as a means to maintain stability, while others see it as a violation of the Police Act. Protests have erupted against the alleged extension, with activists like Omoyele Sowore branding Egbetokun an “illegal IGP” and insisting his continued stay in office is unlawful.
