Thursday, February 13, 2025, will be remembered as a historic day for Delta State. In a single State Executive Council (EXCO) meeting, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration approved an unprecedented N275 billion for infrastructure projects across all sectors in the state’s three senatorial districts.
In his opening remarks, Governor Oborevwori reaffirmed his commitment to delivering transformative projects ahead of his second-year anniversary. He emphasized the urgency of executing these projects swiftly, urging Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to expedite contract awards in line with his MORE Agenda.
> “Today is our first EXCO meeting of the year, and we are determined to maximize the dry season for rapid infrastructure development. Deltans will see that our administration is ready to do more. Every senatorial district and local government area will benefit from these investments. We want to complete as many projects as possible before the rainy season, ensuring that our second-year anniversary is marked by numerous inaugurations.”
Breaking Records with N275bn Projects
At the post-meeting briefing, Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, described the approvals as historic.
“For the first time in 34 years, Delta State has approved over N275 billion worth of projects in a single EXCO meeting. These projects will impact all three senatorial districts, demonstrating Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to even development.”
Aniagwu highlighted that 40% of project mobilization funds were already secured without requiring loans, thanks to the state’s strong financial management.
The approved projects include:
Road Construction & Rehabilitation: Uruagbesa Oria-Abraka Road (Phase 1), Egodo-Ogbeinbene Road, Amai-Aragba Road, Inam-Abbi Access Road, Okerenkoko – Pepeama – Kokodiagbene Road, Benikrukru Township Roads (Phase II), Bomadi-Gbaregolor Road, Ogbe-Isogban Road in Abavo, and many more.
Education Infrastructure: Construction of Faculty B at Southern Delta University, Orerokpe Campus; completion of the Library Building at Delta State University Teaching Hospital, Oghara.
Sports & Urban Development: Remodelling of Warri City Stadium, internal road construction at Ugbolu Hilltop Government Layout, and rehabilitation of Okpanam Road.
Health Sector Boost: N1.6 billion allocated for the Contributory Health Scheme, establishment of a Specialist Hospital at Osubi with a Public Laboratory and Psychiatric Clinic, and total rehabilitation of General Hospital, Expan.
Commissioner for Works (Highways and Urban Roads), Comrade Reuben Izeze, praised the governor’s financial commitment, revealing that outstanding contractor debts—including N8 billion owed for the Trans-Warri Road—had been cleared. He also announced additional storm drainage projects and an upward review of the Ayakoromo Bridge.
Recognition for Excellence
Governor Oborevwori’s leadership continues to earn national recognition:
Induction into NANS Hall of Fame: The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) honored him for his infrastructural and human capital development. NANS President, Comrade Lucky Emonefe, commended the governor’s impact on education and pledged student support for his MORE Agenda.
Educational Development Award: The National Association of Delta State Students (NADESSTU) awarded him the Icon of Educational Development in recognition of initiatives such as bursary approvals for over 62,000 students in 2023 and 2024.
Chevron’s Commitment to Delta State
During a courtesy visit by Chevron Nigeria Limited, Governor Oborevwori applauded the company for maintaining operations in Warri while other oil firms relocated.
“Delta State leads in oil production, and stability in operations benefits us all. We will not allow disruptions to oil production.”
He reassured Chevron of the state’s business-friendly environment and urged the company to enhance its corporate social responsibility efforts.
“I have known Chevron all my life as a Warri boy. You have always supported our communities, but our people need more. My agenda is MORE for Deltans, and we expect continued partnership.”
