The Federal Government (FG) has urged Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, to suspend the local government elections scheduled for tomorrow.
Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, issued the directive while addressing the ongoing political crisis in the state.
In a statement on Thursday, Fagbemi emphasized that the law was clear regarding the Court of Appeal’s ruling, which reinstated sacked All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmen and councilors.
“Any such election that may be held would not only be invalid—since the term of office for the reinstated officials runs until October 2025—but would also constitute a serious violation of the Constitution, which the governor has sworn to uphold,” Fagbemi said.
He urged Adeleke to respect the legal process and avoid actions that could incite violence in Osun State.
“Nobody benefits from violence. It is, therefore, crucial for Governor Adeleke to advise the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) to halt plans for the local government election,” he added.
Meanwhile, Governor Adeleke, in a statewide broadcast, assured residents that peace had been restored following the forceful takeover of local council secretariats by the APC chairmen and councilors.
In a separate statement, his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives or sustained injuries during the crisis.
“The incident reminds us that abiding by the rule of law remains the best path to a peaceful Osun State,” Adeleke said.
He commended residents for adhering to his directive to stay away from council secretariats, noting that their compliance prevented further confrontations and casualties.
“This has helped return Osun, the State of the Living Spring, to its peaceful and loving nature,” he added.
