The European Union (EU) has strongly condemned the recent invasion by M23 rebel forces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
Speaking from the EU Commission’s headquarters in Brussels, Foreign Affairs spokesperson Anouar El Anouni denounced the rebels’ continued advance, calling it a blatant violation of the agreed ceasefire. He warned that the escalation worsens the already dire humanitarian crisis in eastern DRC.
“This issue was also discussed on Monday at the Foreign Affairs Council, where the foreign ministers of the 27 member states unanimously condemned the situation. They expressed readiness to take measures against those jeopardizing peace and stability in the region,” El Anouni stated.
He further emphasized that the EU’s Political and Security Committee is actively addressing the crisis.
The M23 rebel group, engaged in conflict with government forces in North Kivu, has allegedly received backing from Rwandan troops. The rebels recently invaded the eastern city of Goma, a key regional hub with over two million residents, and have now taken control. Reports suggest they may push further into Congolese territory.
Meanwhile, the DRC government has condemned the invasion, calling it an act of war by Rwanda.
