"Barbaric, Unlawful, Ungodly" - CDHR Reacts To Ritual Killing In Ilorin, Demands Justice for Victim
The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) has strongly condemned the gruesome murder of Lawal Hafsoh Yetunde, a final-year student of Kwara State College of Education, Ilorin, allegedly killed for ritual purposes by her boyfriend, Abdulrahman Olatunji Muhammed Bello Idisin, who claims to be an Islamic cleric.
The case, which has shocked residents of Ilorin and beyond, is one of several alarming instances of kidnappings and missing persons in recent times across Kwara State.
Hafsoh was declared missing on Monday, February 10, 2025, after attending a naming ceremony. According to sources, she received a call, left her food to answer it, and never returned.
Investigations revealed that her disappearance was linked to ritual killing. Evidence found at Abdulrahman’s residence allegedly confirmed his involvement, with indications that this may not have been his first such act. A viral video circulating on social media showed the suspect claiming Hafsoh died of an asthma attack while he was away to get her food.
However, he admitted to dismembering her body out of fear.
Further inquiries suggest that Hafsoh was brutally murdered and her body parts harvested for ritual purposes.
The Kwara State Police Command has since arrested Abdulrahman, and investigations are ongoing.
Reacting to the incident, Comrade Idris Afees Olayinka, the National Publicity Secretary of CDHR Nigeria described the killing as “barbaric, unlawful, and ungodly,” calling for swift justice.
The organization urged the Kwara State Police Command and the judiciary to ensure that the perpetrator faces the full weight of the law.
Additionally, the CDHR charged the Kwara State Government to intensify efforts in combating ritual killings and kidnappings for ransom. The group also called for a partnership between the government and religious institutions to regulate public preaching, arguing that some unverified religious teachings mislead young people into such heinous acts.
“It is high time the government took decisive action to curb these senseless killings and preserve our collective humanity,” CDHR stated.
The human rights group reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for justice and protecting the fundamental rights of all citizens.
