An officer of the Nigeria Police Force, identified as Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Shafi’u Usman Bawa (AP/No 337979), died by suicide on Saturday in Kontagora, Niger State.

The tragic incident was confirmed in an official police signal obtained by NewsBulletin, which stated that Bawa took his own life by hanging himself from the ceiling.

According to the report, the officer’s father, Mr. Usman Bawa, a resident of the Rigasa area in Kontagora, reported the incident to the police authorities.

Bawa’s lifeless body was taken to the General Hospital, Kontagora, where a medical doctor officially confirmed his death. His remains were subsequently released to his family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

The police have launched an investigation into the incident, promising to provide further updates as more details emerge.

The police signal read:

“Good afternoon, Sir. SITREP: Suicide. Today, being Saturday, 08/02/25, at about 1410 hours, Mr. Usman Bawa, male, of Rigasa area in Kontagora, reported at the squadron base that his son, AP/No 337979 ASP Shafi’u Usman Bawa, died by suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling.

“The lifeless body was taken to General Hospital, Kontagora, where a medical doctor confirmed his death. The corpse was released to the family for burial according to Islamic rites. Further developments will be communicated in due course. Yours faithfully, CO 61 PMF Kontagora.”
