The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will temporarily close on Thursday, January 9, 2025, in tribute to former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at 100 on December 29, 2024.
The announcement, shared Wednesday evening by the U.S. Mission to Nigeria on its X account, honours Carter’s legacy as the 39th President of the United States (1977–1981). Known for his dedication to peace, democracy, and human rights, Carter also authored numerous books and played a pivotal role in peace negotiations.
As the first U.S. President to visit Nigeria, Carter significantly strengthened U.S.-Nigeria relations and supported the country’s democratic development. The embassy’s statement read:
“We remember former President Jimmy Carter, a tireless advocate for peace, democracy, and human rights. His legacy continues to inspire us.”
