Unilorin VC Addresses Alumni Crisis Amid Institution’s 50th Anniversary Celebration

The Vce Chancellor of the University of Ilorin (Unilorin), Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, has criticized the media for giving undue attention to Dr. Wale Fasakin, the factional president of the institution’s alumni association.

Dr. Fasakin’s four-year tenure, which began in 2020, officially ended in March 2024. However, he has refused to relinquish his position, despite efforts by the university management and personal interventions by the Vice Chancellor to restore unity within the association.

Speaking during a press conference on Monday to unveil the logo for Unilorin’s 50th anniversary, Professor Egbewole expressed his disapproval of the ongoing situation.

“I believe the media is overemphasizing this matter. Dr. Wale Fasakin’s term was clearly defined; he is not a life president. His tenure ended in March 2024. So, how can he still claim the position in 2025? The University of Ilorin Alumni Association remains a reputable and cherished body, and we are committed to its integrity,” he stated.

The Vice Chancellor shifted focus to the significance of 2025, marking it as the university’s golden anniversary year. He highlighted the institution’s ambitious goals, particularly in infrastructure development and global recognition.

“Celebrating our 50th anniversary is not just about looking back but also about pushing the university to the next level. We have strategic plans in place for the 2024–2028 period that focus on advancing research, enhancing infrastructure, and fostering stronger community engagement,” Professor Egbewole noted.

During the event, he unveiled the anniversary logo and reiterated the university’s commitment to becoming a world-class institution. He outlined initiatives such as the establishment of an innovation hub and other projects aimed at empowering students to become job creators rather than job seekers.

The Vice Chancellor also highlighted ongoing efforts to address challenges faced by surrounding communities, emphasizing the institution’s role in identifying and resolving local issues.

Professor Olugbenga Mokuolu, Chairman of the 50th Anniversary Ceremonial Committee, also spoke at the event, describing the anniversary logo as a symbol of the university’s vision and aspirations as it celebrates five decades of excellence.

Unilorin’s golden jubilee promises to be a landmark celebration, with the institution reaffirming its commitment to innovation, progress, and community impact.
